“Let’s all start wearing bolo ties, and when they become hip again, we’ll all say we were kidding.”

- Dana Gould

Once Upon A Time…

I started my MBA at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in the Fall of 2019 and had the fortune of rooming with some bright, yet fun individuals from across the country.  One of my roommates was heading back to Texas to catch a Longhorns game and needed a ride to the airport, which was a painstaking hour drive from Bloomington. These were simpler times and the typical forms of payment varied from a 6-pack of cold ones, a cheap burger at the local joint, or any loose cash we could spare.

As we pulled up to Departures, my roommate turned to me and said, “Thanks for the ride, what do I owe ya?” I said he didn’t owe me this time and drove back to campus delighted to know I helped a friend in need.  As the weekend progressed, I ended up lobbing a call to my roommate to see if he needed a pick-up from the airport.  He said it wasn’t necessary, but after a few moments of chatting he quickly changed his mind.  This time…I demanded payment.  It took me a second to run through all the different types of payments, but then a new offering dawned upon me.  We confirmed flight information and before we ended the call I said with a smirk, “Hey, bring me back one of those stringy tie things!”  He laughed and sarcastically replied, “Ok, partner.”

At the end of the weekend, I got in my car tired and weary at the thought of classes ahead.  I pulled up to Arrivals, my roommate got in the car and handed me a copper Longhorn bolo tie.  He also happened to pick up a bolo for himself!  I was surprised at first, then ecstatic and started running through any occasion that would warrant the new bolo apparel.  Why not start in the classroom?

We sported our first bolo ties in class that week and received nothing but compliments.  These small, yet head-turning bolos were crowd pleasers and brought a smile to everyone’s face.  Our professors couldn’t contain themselves and applauded our stylish tenacity.  By the end of the classes, we had stumbled upon a new found calling, an audacious fashion frontier.

After the positive feedback, we wore bolo ties whenever the occasion called for it.  And to our joy, there were a lot especially during Movember.  Presentations, happy hours, house parties, school gatherings…the list went on.  As we collected different bolo ties, we realized the prospect for new designs was limitless and the need for a modern bolo tie was apparent.

UrbanBolo was created for the modern customer, the bold business professional, and fashion forward individual.  There’s always opportunity to differentiate from the pack and make your mark.  That journey starts here.

All the best,

Dan
